Planning 101 | Unplugged Ceremonies
Have you heard of an unplugged ceremony? It’s where you ask guests to keep their phones in their pockets and bags, to not take any photos during your ceremony and not to post any pictures of you on their social media. To be present and enjoy and celebrate your wedding day in the moment with you.
You want your wedding guests to be present. To be celebrating with you on your dream day, full of love and happiness. You don’t want cellphones blocking the photographer’s shots. The photographer you paid good money for. You don’t want your guests watching you say your vows through their phone screens.
There are a few ways you can choose to manage an unplugged ceremony. You could have a complete photo ban across the whole night. You could ask guests not to take photos during the ceremony. And you could ask guests to refrain from posting any photos of the bride and groom, or bridal party. It’s completely up to you, and depends on the vibe you want for your dream day.
You could let guests know they are more than welcome to post pictures of themselves, or group shots with others, but please - no bride and groom pics. Of course you want to be the one to post your favourite photos from your dream day!
You can let your guests know about your social media decisions by -
having a small message at the bottom of the wedding invitation or programme
having your MC explain the ban before the ceremony starts
having a sign at the venue that guests will see when they arrive
Wedding hashtags are very popular right now. But if you are having a social media ban, don't create a hashtag. Guests are then less likely to post to their social media accounts.
You may also find that during the night, someone may have broken your rule, but don’t let it ruin your day! If you’ve managed to cut down the majority of social media sharing, there’s a win right there.
