Vendor Spotlight | Ebony, Quartet with a Twist

Welcome to our new Vendor Spotlight series - exactly what the title suggests! We’ll be bringing you Q+A’s with the most amazing and beautiful vendors that operate right here in Perth and Western Australia.

Today, we’re chatting to the beautiful Ebony from Quartet with a Twist

How long have you been playing music?

I started the piano when I was nine years old before starting the double bass two years later. I continued both instruments until university where I decided to just focus on double bass. It’s been about 16 years now!

Why did you choose to work on weddings?

It wasn’t specifically a decision to want to start working on weddings. My best friend’s aunt was getting married and wanted live music, so she came to me to put something together. I was always jealous of standard string quartets (two violins, viola, and cello) where the double bass misses out! So I decided to do things my way and replace the cello with the double bass. That was our first gig and 8 years later we’re still going!

How many wedding packages do you offer?

We don’t necessarily call them packages but we offer different instrumentation. Our recommendation is always for the string quartet (consisting of two violins, a viola, and a double bass) which allows for a fuller sound and richer harmonies; however, we do also offer string trios (two violins and double bass) or duos (violin and cello) — yes, we can cater to preferences for cellos, too!

What is your favourite part of a wedding day?

There are so many! One of my favourites though is seeing the bride enter the room — seeing how the atmosphere completely changes and the way the groom’s face lights up!

How far in advance do you prefer couples to book in with you?

Generally 8-12 months is a good timeframe to ensure that we have your date and musicians available. Although, we have had bookings over 2 years in advance and as little as a week’s notice!

Do you charge a delivery or travel fee?

Only for venues that are one hour outside of the Perth CBD. I’ll always provide a quote beforehand so that couples know exactly how much they will be paying.

What’s the number one piece of advice you would give to a couple when planning their wedding?

To ask as many questions as you like and any question at all. Don’t worry if you think it may be a silly or obvious question, we’ve done this many times before but for most couples it’s a new experience! And most people really want to help you out so it’s no trouble at all.
