Planning 101 | 3 tips for planning an elopement

Covid has thrown a spanner in many couple’s wedding plans, so it’s no surprise elopements are still quite common. The uncertainty that surrounds restrictions, borders and outbreaks means that small weddings and elopements are here to stay.

Planning an elopement still requires lots of prep - just maybe not the same prep as a 150-guest wedding. You will still need to pick a date and venue, get your marriage license, pick a celebrant and witness(es), find wedding outfits, hire a photographer and maybe order flowers and figure out travel, if you’re road tripping north or south for your special day. Not quite as easy as just showing up at the registry office!

Read the list below for 3 of our tips for planning an elopement :

Keep the guest list small

If you plan to invite some loved ones and don’t want to keep it a surprise, limit the number to a handful of guests: parents, siblings, and one best friend each. Any more than this, and your elopement becomes a small wedding

Make sure you do add custom touches that mean something to you both

Pick a date that is extra meaningful to you, choose your favourite flowers for your bouquet, or pick a dress in your favourite colour. Make sure the touches you do include are the little things that reflect you both as a couple

Make a plan to celebrate with family and friends at a later date

This can be as simple as a barbecue in the park or an afternoon at the pub. You will be able to enjoy yourself so much more as you won't be stressed about planning a ceremony and will have loads more time to mix and mingle with your loved ones

If you did choose to run away and elope simply in a registry office or with no one but yourselves and your vendors as witnesses, make sure you capture all the moments of your meaningful I dos! They will be beautiful images and photos that you will treasure forever.

And if you kept it a secret, don’t forget to make sure your first call is to your parents to share your joyous news!
